NOTE: 4:1-3 - God Allows Satan to Test Jesus, just as He allowed Job to be severely tested. There is a different order in the temptations Satan set before Jesus as recorded in Luke than in Matthew. For me, this does not pose a problem. As a matter of fact, it but confirms the divine inspiration of the Scriptures. When any four of us would today be witnesses to the same event, we would individually record it with slight differences. The overall record would be the same. The differences would only confirm that the four were true witnesses of the event. In any case, it will do us well to look again at this event as recorded by Matthew. And - in the light of God's Bible Numerics as discovered and worked out by Panin, we have yet anotherevidence of the mathematical proof of the verbal inspiration of our Bible.

4:14-15 - Note here, that the miracles of Jesus did not commence with being baptized in the Holy Spirit. They awaited the 40 days of fasting and prayer in the desert, followed by His successful warding off the 3-fold testing of Satan. Jesus parried Satan's three testings by quoting Scripture. It was after all of thisthat He returned in the power(DUna-mis) of the Holy Spirit. Many have wondered at the weakness and lack of signs following in their own ministries - as they proclaimed the word. Could it be a lack of prayer and fasting, and successfully resisting the temptations of Satan? Paul had those three years in the deserts of Arabia, receiving unusual insights into the 27 “mysteries” of God - before God used him in the ministry. And even then, he had hidden years in Tarsus before Barnabas found him there and made possible their ministry together that started in Antioch.

4:16-30 - Jesus did not start His ministry in Nazareth, but in Capernaum. And when He returned to Nazareth, His credentials were rejected, because they had known Him as a boy. They also were either ignorant or forgetful that Joseph was but His step-father, and God Himself was His true Father! This applied also to the place of Jesus' birth - Bethlehem. Because of the order of enrollment by Caesar, Joseph and Mary went there, where Jesus was born, thus fulfilling Micah's prophecy, that Messiah would be born in Bethlehem, not Nazareth. J.A.W.
